There is a term used in tourism sector, known as Frontier Tourism, where people go much ahead for attracting tourists into the coldest Antarctic, into the depth of oceans and into the hotter wild deserts. Banyan Tree, the hotel management company is planning to move towards frontier tourism to explore a lot in terms of desert tourism. Banyan Tree has launched its luxury desert resort in Ras al Khaimah.
Abu Dhabi’s Tourism Development and Investment Company opened Qasr Al Sarab Desert Resort, Emirates Group opened the Al Maha Desert Resort and Spa, an ultra luxurious resort in Dubai Desert but there are still much development left to be done in desert tourism. According to experts, there is always a little development in desert tourism in UAE, mainly because of the logistics involved and related construction and transportation expenses. It is the reason that desert has been lagging behind. But new desert resort sounds like a good news and fresh gush of air for hotel sector, Dubai.
101-Villa Banyan Tree Al Wadi in RAK is the company’s only hotel in UAE after the Angsana hotel closed last year. There is also a 32-Villa resort on the beach nearby as part of the same project and Banyan Tree took the management of the adjoining Al Hamra golf course. “[The running costs] would be reasonable within the range of the kind of room rate that we are going to get, so we still deliver good returns to an owner,” Mr. Ho Kwon Ping said. “You can see that the fundamentals are still very strong. There will inevitably be a bounce back and we want to part of that bounce back.” The desert resort is charging room rates of between about Dh 2,600 and Dh 4,500.
It sounds a little bit bland to claim RAK as a favorite tourism destination but its popularity will grow soon. It is also true that if you look at UAE, certain places have geographical uniqueness and rulers have managed to present it the way these places are. “Our style is largely to be prime movers in the places we go to. We do think many more projects will come up as a result of this.” Mr. Ho said, “Banyan Tree is in discussions with developers in Abu Dhabi over a number of projects on the emirate’s natural islands.”
Some disputes are also heard about this company but they are hopeful and still looking for more projects in the region.
